Another weird disappointment of the film was that they had the thralls belonging to rival chieftains playing some kind of rough ball game on a field which had some standing water, but nobody got visibly muddy. It looked like a cross between lacrosse and field hockey, but there was plenty of striking each other with the sticks and pelting each other with the ball with no penalties called. Dr. Jackson Crawford, a Scandinavian studies professor, said there really was a game like that but that most likely it would have been the freemen of rival clans who played each other, not the thralls.
