The first time I experienced wet school uniform was lifesaving training. We were told to bring a spare set of uniform into school that day. We were allowed to remove our shoes and our ties, but otherwise kept on our shirts, dark grey trousers and underwear. The idea was that we had to jump into the pool in clothes as close to normal as possible to rescue someone in the water. I think that was the point of why we had to wear school uniform rather than casual clothes. I remember the instructor being quite emphatic that we should NOT be wearing swimming costumes under our clothes. Girls also took part in the exercise, but they were allowed to wear tracksuits. I guess this is because their skirts would have “lifted” in the water.
