We had a few swimming lessons like this and students wore their own casual clothes, just a top and trousers worn over swimming trunks. That all changed with the arrival of a new PE teacher who was from a military background. He insisted that the survival and lifesaving practices were done in full school uniform, although blazers, ties and shoes were saved from going in the pool. Also normal underwear had to be worn, which meant boxers and socks had to be kept on, and speedos were not allowed. (Interestingly, speedos were compulsory to wear under shorts for other dry activities, but that is another story.)The chlorine had to be washed out immediately afterwards, which led to boys showering in their uniforms and then taking their wet clothes home in plastic bags.
