You must have lived farther north than me, as I remember the best way of getting used to the water was just jumping right in. Though when I was a kid I had a step dad that had a boat. We lived on it all summer long which I mostly hated, but I did get to go swimming multiple times a day. The marina had a pool we’d swim in and during the week it wasn’t busy and they would turn the heating feature of the pool off so the water was cold Monday - Thursday. So we would always start by just jumping into the pool, then we were used to the cold water. As a kid I would only swim in swim trunks, so no normal clothes. I like your use of jean shorts to get wet in, those are some of my favorite shorts to get wet.
