I enjoy the public events because the concern of being outed or cleanup are not present. I sometimes enjoy a little, or a lot, of mud while hiking, but usually on deserted trails and areas with few people, and try to find a water source to cleanup before I get back to the trailhead.
Those are all nonissues at bigger events, although you are at the mercy of whatever quality of dirty water the organizers decide is mud. One thing, maybe the most, I enjoy with public events is seeing everyone else getting dirty and having fun, planned or not, along with how open and friendly people can be.
