I'm surprised you didn't get on the news. I've had a few occasions where dogs behaved aggressively towards me when I was going through water or mud. I think it may have something to do with it being a behavior they're not accustomed to see in humans.
One time back in the 1990's I was wading across Barton Creek in Austin when a dog charged at me from the other bank. I grabbed a rock from the creek bed and prepared to lob it. The owner called it off, and I continued crossing the creek.
Another time I was preparing to climb the Mogollon Rim in Arizona's high country in December of 2001. A mixture of rain and snow was falling, but I wasn't very wet or muddy yet. I was confronted by a snarling dog with no owner nearby. I reached for my .45 automatic, upon which the dog promptly ran away, as if it knew precisely what I held in my hand. I think it was probably feral.
