One problem with seeking refuge from lightning in a ditch is that during thunderstorms with heavy rain a ditch can place you in a more vulnerable position to flash flooding, depending upon how long and deep the ditch is. Still the risk of either fate is slight, and I'm glad you made the best of it to have another mud wallow.
