Near where I live is a long bike path that connects several small towns. My friends and I like to ride our bikes on the path. Over the weekend there was a town carnival going on at a town about 6 miles away, and my friend Jim and and his friend Patrick planned on riding our bikes over to the carnival.
We got to the carnival a little before noon, locked up our bikes and started walking around. At one end of the carnival there was a dunk tank setup with a man wearing a shirt and tie in it. We didn't pay much attention to it, and moved on to other stuff. As we were wandering around we bumped into some of our other friends who also were at the carnival.
We eventually worked our way back over towards the dunk tank, which at the moment didn't have a victim sitting on it. There were a bunch of kids wearing some kind of uniform clustered around it - the uniform looked like a red and yellow striped polo shirt and tan dress pants. We stopped and watched for a minute, and eventually a blond boy maybe a little older than us climbed up onto the dunk tank. Patrick thought he recognized him from school or something, so we walked over to the dunk tank. Turns out the kid was named Matt, who was a year old than Patrick and went to his school. It cost $1 for 3 throws, so all of us got in line.
There was a big poster next to the dunk tank that I stepped over to read it after I dunked Matt. It said that it was a "community celebrity dunk tank." Earlier that day the victims had been the police chief, the mayor, school teachers, etc. Apparently in the afternoon the "celebrities" were youth group-type leaders. Matt was the president of a community service and leadership group, and next up was a kid named Ben who was the leader of a boy scout troop.
As Matt's scheduled time end, a few kids in scout uniforms started showing up, and a kid who must have been Ben climbed up on the seat. While Matt looked like he was having a good time in the dunk tank, Ben didn't look like he was having so much fun.
Jimmy and Patrick also walked over to read the poster about the dunk tank. After Ben's turn was over, it said there would be a couple hours of "Open Dunk," which I thought meant anyone who wanted to could get dunked. Jimmy said "too bad we didn't know they were gonna have a dunk tank, cuz we should have brought swim suits."
Now, I was in a dunk tank before, and I knew Jimmy was also in a dunk tank at least once, and I thought it would be fun to go in the dunk tank today. But, I was a little nervous about it. When I was in a dunk tank before, I was just with my friends, not in public, so I was nervous about getting soaked in a huge crowd of people like this.
I figured I'd volunteer to go in as long Jimmy or Patrick also volunteered. I said "well, we could just go in like this..." Patrick said "what, you mean like in our clothes?" I tried to shrug casually and said "yeah, why not?" Jimmy said "I guess it doesn't look like anyone else has a swimsuit either..."
I asked Jimmy "So you'll go in?" He said "will you?" I said "If you go first." He said "Ok fine, but you're going next," and started to take his shoes off. I asked "What about you Patrick?" He looked kind of shocked that we both agreed to go in and asked "wait, have either of you actually been in one of those before." I said that I was in one at a party, and Jimmy said he was in one at a church picnic. Patrick said "well, what's it like?" Jimmy said it was really really fun, but also really cold! I said it was like one second you're warm and dry, and the next second you're underwater, but its not scary and its really fun.
So by now Ben's turn was over, and a teenage girl had volunteered to climb up on the tank. Jimmy emptied his pockets and walked over to the ladder on the side of the tank. After the girl was dunked a couple times, she decided she was done, and climbed out, so Jimmy climbed up on the seat. Me and Patrick both got in line to dunk him, and he got dunked a bunch of times by a lot of people. Some of our other friends who were also at the carnival wandered over when they saw Jimmy was in the dunk tank. Our friend Jon came up to me and asked "what did Jimmy do to have to go in the dunk tank?" I said that he had volunteered, and I was going to go in next. Jon shrugged and said "oh cool."
After a while I walked over to the side of the tank, and got ready to go in. Jimmy was still up on the seat, and he asked me if I was ready to go. I said yes, and he said "OK just let me get dunked one more time." After he splashed down again, he climbed out of the tank, and I climbed up.
Patrick, Jimmy and Jon were the first people to try to dunk me, but I was also getting dunked by people I didn't even know, which was kind of weird and a little embarrassing. It was still fun though, and felt good on the hot day - they left a hose running into the tank, so the water was always cold.
While I was up on the tank, Jimmy and Patrick were talking near the side of the tank. Jimmy was trying to get Patrick to go in the tank, and it sounded like Patrick was starting to give in. After I had had enough of getting dunked, I climbed out of the tank, and Patrick got up on the seat.
Even though at first he didn't want to get dunked, he seemed to have a good time up there, making fun of the crowd. He eventually got out of the tank and we were all talking with our friends Jon and Tyler. Me and Jimmy were trying to get them to also volunteer to go in the dunk tank too. Tyler said he'd go in if Jon went in too, but Jon wasn't interested. Patrick, now dripping wet, said that he also didn't want to, but its actually really fun and feels pretty good. Jon eventually gave in, probably just to get us to stop bothering him, and he got in line to go in the tank. By this point there were a few other people in line to get dunked, mostly kids around our age. Eventually the line started to get kind of long, and the people running it decided to limit it so each person could only get dunked 5 times before they had to get out and go back in line if they wanted. So when it was Jon's turn on the seat, we all didn't have a chance to dunk him, and we couldn't get him to take another turn. Tyler also went in the tank, and Jon was the first to dunk him.
So eventually we had all taken a turn in the tank, and were now all soaking wet. Jon and Tyler were a little worried because Tyler's parents were going to pick them up in a couple hours, but it was hot out so we figured they'd dry in plenty of time. The other three of us dried out pretty good while we were still walking around the carnival, but my shorts and underwear were still a little damp for the bike ride home, which was a little uncomfortable.
This was my first time getting wet in a public place, with more than just people I'm friends with. It was a little embarrassing, but still pretty fun.
