Call me the odd man out, but I really can't see that you did anything wrong. The legal term in my jurisdiction for what you did is "justification, defense of a third party." As for biting, sure it sounds undignified, but it's better than drowning.

In terms of tactics, the only thing I could think of that you might have improved is to find some heavy object to have used as an improvised weapon against those two. Then again, I wasn't there, so I don't know what your options may have been.
